Happy Nurses Week!

May 6, 2019
National Nurses’ Day was first proposed back in 1953 by Dorothy Sutherland, an official with the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. However, President Dwight D. Eisenhower would not approve it. So it wasn’t until 1974 that the ball really got rolling when the International Council of Nurses proclaimed May 12 International Nurse Day. May 12 is the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the English nurse who is considered the founder of modern nursing. Then in 1982, President Ronald Reagan signed a proclamation that established a national day of observance for nurses on May 6. This would later be extended to a whole week long of celebration to include May 12.

Nurses are everywhere we look today. They’re no longer just in the hospitals. And no longer wear just white gowns or scrubs and white hats. Nurses work in a wide range of areas including Nursing Homes, Home Health Agencies, Physicians Offices, Schools, Developmentally Disabled schools and work areas, Group Homes, and even serve in our military. Some are even able to write orders and treat patients depending on the type of nurses’ license they earn. They are a vital piece to our healthcare team and deserve the recognition for their hard work and dedication to their patients.
